MY REVIEW
This title is part of the Ultimate Guitar titles and one the the best method DVDs of mechanics Ive seen come out of Lick Library to date . Andy is one of the fastest most accurate players I know and who better to take us through speed mechanics than him ...
In this DVD Andy goes through all his picking methods with a fine tooth comb ,, anchoring, muting, the pick angles, the mechanics and muscles used and which pick he uses (you'll have to watch to see) but he does put a surgical plaster on it for grip and its a fat 3mm
This starts of a basic level and is really incredible for a foundational DVD in mechanics and tips and great for Andy James fans, but he also does quote other players methods as well as his own giving us the choices from guys like such as Malmsteen Putrucci and Gilbert , but don't be fooled it gets trickier further in , this is a great information DVD as well and examples.
SECTION 2
Streangth and Stamina
Andy goes through Legato and right hand stamina , syncing them up and this is mainly focused on alternate picking.
Andy says its really a key to secrets that unlock the door to speed , and the examples are all played at reasonable speeds NOT incredibly fast as as we all know Andy can do so well . The importance and method of accenting and timing plus string grouping are also featured in this section .
Section 3
Octaves
This is more a sequencing mechanics section and doesn't feature any octaves like at first you may think up , and the sequences are taken into several octaves hence the title.
There are so many great tips and tricks in this section , from sequence through out , plus some more legato is put into this part of the DVD
Section 4
Snap Picking
This carries on some of the ideas from the previous section , he shows idea from the late great Shawn Lane , Buckethead and Paul Gilbert , Andy keeps it mechanical and not filled hordes of theory minutes ticking away , pure speed mechanics .
Section 5
Improvisation
This is a great section in finding the thought process and ways Andy finds his way around and what his methods are.
There are alot of great tips and additions to boxes and shapes.
This is one of the best method and mechanic DVDs I've seen but its not the most terrifying or speed based , but it does build a great foundation to those looking build their knowledge and method base . There is actually plenty of usefull theory in this section but its not crazy difficult stuff and usefull straight away
Also there are some great improvised tracks plus backing section, 3 great tracks played by Andy are a welcome bonus to this already packed DVD
THUMBS UP
SUMMERY
This DVD is a beginner soloists dream and an intermediate players treasure chest of great tips and tricks and advancing players may well know most of the stuff on this DVD but I really think its a great reminder of stuff sometimes gets forgotten plus little things pop out I didn't know.
